Fritz Hansen

What makes Fritz Hansen stand out?

Fritz Hansen is an exclusive, international brand whose timeless collection combines world-famous classic and contemporary furniture, lighting and accessories. The Fritz Hansen collection includes works of art such as Arne Jacobsen's Egg™, Swan™ and Series 7™ chairs, Poul Kjærholm's PK22™ chair and PK80™ sofa, Jaime Hayon's Ro™ chair and Cecilie Manz's Caravaggio™ lamp. The origins of Fritz Hansen's company date back to 1872, when a furniture production plant was established in Christianshavn. The company's first fifty years are defined by a long list of prestigious contracts that include the production of furniture for the Danish Parliament and the Supreme Court at Christiansburg Palace, the University Library, Copenhagen City Hall and other significant institutions. At the turn of the century, Fritz's forward-thinking son, Christian, began experimenting with steam bending techniques and perfected the technique, eventually becoming a leader in the production of molded and laminated wood furniture. It also introduces the first Danish steel furniture to the market, including the iconic Church Kaare Klinta chair, produced until 2004. Despite the hardships of World War II, Fritz Hansen expands his factory. In 1944, architect and designer Hans. J. Wegner creates the China Chair™ for Fritz Hansen - a piece of furniture that becomes the first icon of this designer. A year later, Børge Mogensen creates the Spoke-back sofa, which was ahead of its time and went into production only years later, as the most Danish of all sofas. The 1950s were dominated by the work of Arne Jacobsen. His breakthrough is the Ant™ chair, and the introduction of the wood veneer technique marks a new milestone in the brand's history. Jacobsen then creates the iconic Egg™ and Swan™ chairs for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, as well as the elegant and architectural Series 3300™ lounge chair for the SAS terminal. The 1970s were a breakthrough for the brand, in 1979 Fritz Hansen announced the sale of his family's shares in the company to Skandinavisk Holding, which, thanks to significant investments and comprehensive reforms, successfully strengthened the company's position. Fritz Hansen acquires the rights to the Kjærholm furniture collection, designed by Poul Kjærholm between 1951 and 1980. The introduction of Republic of Fritz Hansen™ in 2000 becomes another strategic change for the brand, emphasizing the importance of furniture as an expression of individuality in professional and private environments. The brand invites new designers to cooperate, giving the collections a contemporary perspective. In 2011, Fritz Hansen started cooperation with the renowned Spanish designer Jaime Hayon. The result is beautiful, comfortable and carved furniture as well as elegant and functional accessories. In 2015, the Lightyears brand was taken over, and in 2016 Fritz Hansen introduced the Objects collection, thus opening up new customers by offering beautiful, but cheaper items. With an international presence and an ever-expanding furniture collection, Fritz Hansen continues its journey of creating elegant, human-centered design that never sacrifices comfort and style.
