There is an ancient theory that accounted for lunar phases in a different way than we do today. This theory held that the Moon was in fact flat. One side of the Moon was silvery-white, the other side was black, and it was the orbiting of this half-black, half-white Moon around the Earth that caused the lunar phases.
Blue skies is a table lamp composed of a silver base and a Hinoki wood and Tosa-Washi paper reflector. A projected light beam is shot upwards from the base and is caught by the paper shade positioned at an angle directly above. A reflected, meditative glow on a floating disc, highlighting the texture of the paper’s structure. A simple balancing gesture of capturing light which would have otherwise been lost.
The lampshade is made in Japan, with the craftsmanship of local artisans. The meticulous execution obtained through traditional methods, handed down through generations, gives the product lightness and poetry. Tosa-Washi paper fibres are handprocessed, layered, pressed, dried, and dipped into Konnyaku liquid to form a thin and durable sheet. The disc is then precisely cut to size around the handmade Kiso Cypress Wood disk.
